Photo Stories:
3.2.7 "HOCO 2017" This was my first time creating a photo story, with no help or template to follow. I was responsible for choosing which photos to use and more importantly, how to arrange them. My objective was to have a dominant photo and select photos featuring specific individuals in a variety of settings. I was proud when this won an Honorable Mention in 2017, and I think the title is fun and captivating. 4.2.2. "Huron Builds a rain garden" This photo story was important to me because I actually participated in the event with NHS, took the photos and wrote the piece. By being a part of the effort to build the rain garden, I was able to design the page using my own photography, capturing my personal experience. Front Page Growth: Volume 3-Issue 3 front page As evidence of how my design skills have improved, I included one of my first front page designs to demonstrate how text heavy the page is, with no graphics to captivate the reader. The news briefs on the left column were converted into previews in order to get the reader to view other pages. Volume 3-Issue 4 front page This design was important to me not just because it won 2nd place in “Best Front Page Design” in 2018, but because it marked the point when my skills with inDesign really began to develop. I learned how to do a cut-out, featuring Alex and Maia Shibutani on the front page, who are actually Huron alumni. I also learned that using color, while it can make something pop, can also make it tough to read. I remember being on the phone with our publisher, Tom Campbell, trying to change the shades to make it more readable. Volume 4-Issue 1-Pages 1 and 2 This design was done in collaboration with a fellow editor over the summer, so it was challenging not working together in person. I had never co-designed before, and I found it to be beneficial because we both provided ideas for sketches and graphics. This was also one of our first experiences jumping stories, and although it was difficult, it enhanced the options for our design. We also experimented with creating previews on the side and featuring guest writers for the first time. |
