Ad Campaign
At the start of my senior year, I thought about how much effort the staff puts into every publication, yet I never see many people actually reading the paper. Perhaps due to the fact that students didn't know much about the Emery. To fix this, I encouraged staffers to share information about the Emery online. I talked with teachers to make sure they promote the paper in their classrooms. Finally, I created flyers which I posted across the school to invite students to guest write and visit our website. I also got approval for volunteer hours for students who attend focus groups. Powerschool Announcements To further promote the Emery, I tried to make sure that for every edition, an announcement was sent out via powerschool and an email went to all staff. This required planning and coordination as there is a lengthy approval process for such communications. Registration/Enrollment Recruiting new students is critical to success of the paper and involves getting students to enroll in the class. Finding students interested in joining, especially those with experience in journalism, is not easy. I compile a database of students from registration each semester and send out an email to encourage them to join. I especially encourage those in the journalism course to join newspaper, because to be a successful publication, the content must be well written. Ad Night I had the idea to promote the program and increase engagement with the student body through offering volunteer hours. I arranged an Ad Night, promoting it via our instagram, the school communication channels and NHS. Students came to the event and helped call businesses that might agree to purchase an ad. The list of businesses to call were compiled from other newspapers where they purchased an ad as well as business that I thought might be interested in advertising to high school students. From the event, I even found a new business manager and raised money for the publication. Grants/Newspaper Stands To further increase distribution, I worked with Mrs. Badalamente to secure grant money in order to get newspaper stands. Receiving two stands allowed students to have a central place to find papers with new and old editions. It is a also a means for parents to get editions while attending events at Huron. |
