I never saw myself as a feature writer, but I soon learned that students hold the real stories. They are passionate and engaged, and their opinions and accomplishments deserve to be shared and celebrated. Writing features improved my interviewing and writing skills. I had a responsibility to accurately and honestly represent their personal story.
3.5.6 “What’s it like to be a student entrepreneur?” Just ask Junior Surya Raghavendran”
3.6.1 “Getting Down to Business: Nathan Lee becomes BPA president” Business Professionals of America is a national organization with state chapters and local high school chapters. Senior Nathan Lee is president of the Michigan Chapter, and this piece tells the story of his accomplishments and all that is required to get the prestigious position. The most difficult part was getting him to tell me enough information. 4.1.1 “Raghavendran fights “unfair and deceptive” Michigan Policies through Right to Repair” While I was interning in Lansing for State Representative, Raghavendran called me to ask about whether I knew about the Right to Repair legislation that was being considered. This piece highlights how his passion and interest motivated him to get involved in policy change, since Right to Repair directly impacts his business. This piece is a prime example of localizing important news to our high school. 4.2.6 “Turning Something Simple into Success: Steven Chettleburgh” The feature also examines a student interested in business and entrepreneurship who operates a company. Steven Chettleburgh is a senior who began yard service as a chore, but turned it into successful business and actually employs other students at Huron. I enjoy interviewing students who have unique accomplishments and interests. We actually did this interview at Band Camp. |
