The Conservative Corner provided me an opportunity to discover my passion for politics as I researched topics that personally mattered to me. Writing this column challenged me to communicate my views in a respectful and informative way. As I look back at my own writings, I can see how my views have evolved, which is helpful as I am always concerned about my personal development as a writer.
2.1.6 "Why do you believe what you believe?"
This was the very first Conservative Corner I published. Nervous for how readers might react, I decided to take a more neutral stance to not lose readers. Many of my peers hold very strong opinions, yet when asked about why they hold these opinions, it was difficult for them to articulate. I wrote this column to motivate and prompt questioning among students as well as myself. 2.4.4 "Do cabinet picks tell the real story?" During the 2016 election campaign, Trump’s promise to “drain the swamp” was something that resonated with me. While he did create stricter lobbying efforts, the cabinet, entirely in his control, did not represent a drained swamp. I wrote this to call out the hypocrisy and to emphasize that everyone has a responsibility to hold people accountable when they are wrong, regardless of the party. 3.2.4 “What do sanctuary cities mean for the U.S.” I feel very passionate about immigration reform and believe that the Republican viewpoint is important when developing solutions to the issues. This column allowed me to share my voice, while having the chance to, in a way, draft my own policy, which I believe could gain bipartisan support. 3.4.3 “Breaking Down the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act” At the time this was passed, I really didn’t know much about the bill, and whether the tax cuts were beneficial to the average American. I heard my peers complaining about the bill, yet when I questioned them, they couldn’t explain their discontent. I wrote this to column make it understandable to students and to help formulate my own opinions, observing that while there are benefits, the cuts still favor the upper class and big business. 4.1.1 “Defying my own principle and learning a lesson” This column was important to me as it was a feature about me and my experiences. I explained how over a dozen of the Young Conservative Club posters had been torn down and shredded. I challenged the administration for their poor handling of the situation. I also shared how the Young Conservatives were able to have a respectful and proactive debate with the Young Dems, as the nation becomes increasingly more divided. 4.2.3 "The Politics of our Judiciary System- calling out both parties" I have observed that the judicial system has become increasingly partisan. I wrote this column in an effort to hold those on both sides of the isle accountable, because an independent judicial system is critical to the maintenance of freedom. |
