News gathering is what I enjoyed the most, acting as an investigator at times interviewing teachers and students off the record to get the full story
“The truth about the teachers on wheels” (3.3.4)
With the International Baccalaureate (IB) being introduced at Huron, it resulted in several dozen more teachers being hired, but no new classroom added. As a result, various teachers had to teach in three different classrooms, rushing around during passing times. I observed teachers pushing all their materials on a cart and at times arriving late, Therefore, I decided that it was important to give faculty a voice who had to move. I interviewed many teachers, and several of them went anonymous if fear of how the administration would react. Many teachers were grateful for my efforts to present their struggles. “The Controversy of Personal Project” (3.5.2) With the IB program being implemented at Huron, it requires all sophomores to complete a personal project class for a semester. While this is helpful to future full diploma programme students (designing an own investigation), I did not think this requirement was fair and necessary for students not pursuing the IB diploma. Therefore, I interviewed students to make sure their voice was heard and cover how teachers reacted to teaching this course. “Student Bathrooms Need Fixes Now” (3.3.4) I realized that many student bathrooms did not have working locks among other features such as working soap dispensers. Toilets were also out of order for extended periods of time. I identified the issues and then put together a proposal for the cost of these repairs, including student feedback. I met with the principal and changes were later made. |
